Telecommuters Angry By Yahoo CEO's New Ban On Working From Home

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's decision to require employees who work remotely to relocate to company facilities starting in June has sent shock waves through the world of telecommuters.

Mayer, who was six months pregnant with her first child when she was hired as Yahoo's top executive, has been shaking things up at the dot-com by bringing back free food and new iPhones for company use. But her latest move has workers – even those not employed by Yahoo – quite angry.

"I do think she's setting, you know, women in the workplace back," Momsla.com co-founder Sarah Auerswald said. "It's the 21st Century. I think we're all going mobile, right? You know, we've got to be more flexible with how we work."

The move is apparently being made to spark creativity and innovation.

"To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side," a memo from Yahoo HR Jackie Reses reads. "That is why it is critical that we all be present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings."

"Sometimes you can have great inspiration sitting at your desk at home," Auerswald said. "It doesn't always have to be in an office."

It's not clear how many of Yahoo's 11,500 employees will be affected by the change.
