3 Female Pedestrians Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver In Anaheim

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Three female pedestrians were killed in Anaheim Saturday evening by an alleged drunk driver, according to authorities.

The brother and son of two of the victims told CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Art Barron that the women were walking home from a baby shower. The third victim was the man's cousin.

Police say 40-year-old Anthony Lewis Sanchez -- a Buena Park resident driving a red four-door Honda Civic -- was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI.

One of the victims was declared dead at the scene and the other two women died at a nearby trauma center.

The deceased were identified as Carmen Mendoza, 56; Sheyla Mendoza, 21 and Stephanie Henriquez, also 21.

Sanchez and a passenger in his car were treated for minor injuries, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Bob Dunn.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. in the 100 block of South Western Avenue.

Reporting from the scene, Barron spoke to Carla Martinez, a longtime friend of Sheyla Mendoza's. "I've known her for so long. And we were so close. I just miss her."

A makeshift memorial with candles and roses appears at the scene. Barron also said a skid marks in the road was a haunting reminder that three people lost their lives there.
