LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — LAPD Chief Charlie Beck Thursday made a heartfelt plea to triple murder suspect Christopher Dorner to turn himself in to police before there’s any more bloodshed.

KCAL9’s Kristine Lazar said Beck was noticeably emotional as he detailed the deadly rampage by one of his former officers.

“The hearts of the Los Angeles Police Department, and my own, go out to the families that lost loved ones due to Dorner’s criminal actions,” said Beck.

Dorner, 33, is accused of fatally shooting a Riverside officer on Thursday and an Irvine couple Feb. 3, in what police have called “revenge killings.”

Beck said the suspect, who was employed by the LAPD from 2005 to 2008, was fired from the department for allegedly lying about the actions of a fellow officer.

“That case was thoroughly adjudicated and reviewed at multiple levels. I think in the analysis you’ll find Dorner’s statements to be self-serving and the statements of somebody who is extremely unhappy with his lot in life,” he said.

The police chief said Dorner is highly trained with multiple weapons in his arsenal, including an assault rifle.

“Of course he knows what he’s doing. We trained him. He was also a member of the Armed Forces,” said Beck.

Beck said they have 40 different protection patrols guarding families during the manhunt for Dorner.
