NUEVO (CBSLA.com) — A mother and a daughter were attacked and killed Monday while they were walking in a rural community east of Perris.

Riverside County sheriff’s investigators said the incident happened just after 5 p.m. at Menifee Road and Central Avenue in Nuevo.

“It was daylight… the sun had not set yet when the crime occurred,” said Capt. Scot Collins.

Collins said both women died from serious traumatic injuries.

Authorities are searching for a suspect they described as a Hispanic man in his early 20s.

“(Witnesses said) he fled the area on foot. Deputies searched the area and didn’t locate him. Detectives are still working the case to determine who the suspect is and what the motive is,” said Collins.

Resident Tanya Casas, who moved to Nuevo a year ago, said she felt uneasy after the attack.

“It’s a far, far away land where you wouldn’t imagine something like this would happen,” she said.
