Family Of 84-Year-Old Woman Mauled By Pit Bulls In Jurupa Valley Speaks Out

JURUPA VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — An 84-year-old woman remains hospitalized in Riverside County Tuesday while she recovers from a vicious pit bull attack.

Waly Nichols was attacked by two neighbor pit bulls around 11 a.m. Jan. 17, according to Riverside County Department of Animal Services spokesperson John Welsh.

Nichols lost part of her left ear and is suffering from severe wounds to her left arm and right leg.

"She has two wounds about the size of your fist where the dogs have taken out big chunks of her calf on her right leg," Waly's son Gary said. "Oh it's terrible. It's like a nightmare."

Gary, who lives with his mother on 54th Street, was in the living room when he heard his mom cry out.

"She was just screaming," he said. "She was lying over there and the dogs were mauling her, and I came down and kicked them real hard and they ran back in their yard."

The mother of three was transported to Riverside County Hospital where she underwent surgery.

"She seemed to go through the operation pretty well," Gary said.

Nichols will need a skin graft after an infection in her injured calf heals.

The two pit bulls involved in the attack have been euthanized.

The family has created a website to keep loved ones up-to-date on Nichols' progress.
