LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA is adding sand volleyball as a women’s intercollegiate sport starting this spring.
Athletic director Dan Guerrero said Tuesday that the team will be coached by former UCLA men’s volleyball star Stein Metzger. He was a volunteer coach with the Bruins’ women’s team last year. Metzger played on the pro beach volleyball tour, and earned a silver medal at the 2003 world championships.
Metzger will work closely with Michael Sealy, coach of UCLA’s women’s indoor volleyball team.
Sand volleyball was approved by the NCAA as an emerging sport in 2009, with the first year of competition being 2011-12. UCLA will join 20 other schools nationwide who have added the sport since then.
The Bruins will practice and play their home matches in Santa Monica.
