LA Public Works Prez Alarcón To Resign Over Past 'Missteps'
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles Board of Public Works President Andrea Alarcón issued her notice of resignation on Friday in the wake of a public scandal that ultimately led to a child endangerment investigation.
In a statement, Alarcón said she submitted her letter of resignation effective Wednesday, Jan. 23, and apologized to city officials and the public for her actions.
"I understand and have prayed deeply on the gravity of my actions," she said. "I have profound regret for the missteps of my past and apologize to the Mayor, Council, Department of Public Works, the city family and the residents of Los Angeles."
Her resignation will take effect the same day Alarcón, 33, is scheduled to appear before a San Bernardino judge on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence.
Since her then-10-year-old daughter was also in the car at the time of her arrest last year near Running Springs, Alarcón also faces child endangerment charges linked to the incident.
In December, Alarcón announced she would seek "professional help" after her daughter, now 11, was found unattended outside City Hall shortly before midnight.
Now, the the daughter of L.A. City Councilman Richard Alarcón said she wants to focus on her family.
"I am grateful for the difficult lessons that I have learned and am now healthier and stronger," said Alarcón. "Through this experience, I have been reminded of my most important job - being a mom. I look forward to the next chapter in my life dedicated to my family and my daughter."
Jan. 23 is the next scheduled court date for Alarcón in the San Bernardino drunken driving and child endangerment case.
