Man Dies While Being Taken Into Custody By Police In Culver City

CULVER CITY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Saturday are investigating the circumstances of the death of a suspect who died while in custody.

Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives are at a home in the 3900 block of Van Buren Place in Culver City.

Culver City Police were dispatched to an emergency call inside an apartment at that location Saturday  just after 1 p.m.

The woman who opened the door told police her son was under the influence of drugs and highly agitated. The man was reportedly destroying furniture.

Officials said the man refused to cooperate, including an attempt at hiding under his bed.

After police dragged him out from under the bed, they said he kicked at officers and mumbled incoherently. After being subdued and handcuffed, they reported the man looked pale.  Officers checked his vital signs and said he had a faint pulse.

Paramedics were called and the man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said a subsequent search of the man's bedroom turned up a variety of drug paraphernalia, including what is believed to be methamphetamine.

The man's mother told police her son had a history of drug abuse.

The official cause of death will follow completion of an autopsy.
