CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — The California Highway Patrol reopened the Grapevine portion of Interstate 5 on Saturday.
The 44-mile stretch of the highway was closed shortly after 3:15 a.m. due to icy road conditions and multiple vehicle spin outs, according to the CHP.
The freeway initially reopened to escorted traffic nearly four hours later. Within about 20 minutes, officials removed the cones and the highway was fully operational.
CBS2′s Joy Benedict had reported that overnight traffic was diverted off Parker Road in Castaic during the closure, leaving many drivers stranded.
The closure marked the second within the past week due to the weather. The highway was closed on Thursday due to heavy snow in the area.
