LAKEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A 36-year-old man was fatally shot and five people were injured at a New Year’s Eve party in Lakewood, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies.
The shooting was reported at 11:20 p.m. Monday at a house in the 20700 block of Alburtis Avenue.
The homeowner said a family friend got into an argument in their driveway with people she didn’t know. They said the strangers opened fire, injuring the family friend and killing another man.
The gunmen then came towards the family.
“I heard gunshots just following us, one after another — pow, pow, pow!” said a female resident who did not want to be identified.
Multiple bullets hit the home, missing several children and a baby.
The family believes the suspects only stopped shooting because they ran out of bullets.
The suspects then fled on foot.
The man killed has not been identified by police. Five other people at the party — the family friend, three other men and a woman — were shot and suffered minor, non-life threatening injuries, according to police reports. They are expected to recover.
The family that lives at the home said they now fear for their lives because none of the suspects have been apprehended.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call investigators at (323) 890-5500.
