LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — James Ennis and Mike Caffey scored 19 points apiece as Long Beach State defeated Pacific 67-63 Saturday in the Big West Conference opener for both schools.
Tony Freeland added 15 points for the 49ers (5-7) and Dan Jennings had 10.
Pacific (6-7) got 13 points each from Lorenzo McCloud and Trevin Harris, and 10 from Tony Gill.
Long Beach overcame an 11-point first-half deficit and got three key second-half 3-pointers from Caffey. The first gave the 49ers their first lead of the game, 36-35, with 14:49 remaining.
With the score tied at 44-all, Caffey hit two more 3s and a two-point jumper during a 14-4 run that put Long Beach ahead 58-48 with 6:30 left.
Pacific closed within five points, then made it a two-point game on a Harris 3-pointer with 28 seconds to go, but Long Beach held on despite making just 2 of 8 free throws in the final minute.
