Retired Hockey Players Arrested In Brawl At OC Fast Food Joint

LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Two retired hockey players were arrested last Friday following an alleged road rage brawl at a fast food restaurant in Laguna Beach.

Former Anaheim Ducks player Jean-Francois Jomphe, 40, was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery and vandalism, and ex-Toronto Maple Leafs player Richard Costello, 49, was booked on suspicion of assault in connection to the incident that happened around 12:45 a.m. in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box.

Jomphe and Costello were in a cab that cut off a 20-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Jetta who had been waiting to get into the restaurant's drive-thru lane, according to Capt. Jason Kravetz of the Laguna Beach Police Department.

When a passenger in the Jetta made a "hand gesture of 'Hey, what's up with that?', Kravetz said Jomphe exited the taxi and shattered the Jetta's window.

"The flying glass cuts one of the kids in the face," said Kravetz.

Officials reported that when Costello tried to restrain Jomphe, the 49-year-old allegedly punched and tried to kick another man who was attempting to break up the disturbance.

Jomphe and Costello were taken into custody and released on their own recognizance. As of Friday, they haven't been charged.
