Elderly Woman Dead, 2 Men Injured In Chinatown Apartment Fire

CHINATOWN (CBSLA.com) — An elderly woman is dead and two others injured after an apartment fire broke out in Chinatown Wednesday night.

The fire was sparked just after 6 p.m. in the 700 block of North Cleveland Street, Los Angeles City Fire Department officials said.

Fire officials say it started in an upstairs unit of a two-story apartment complex.

Two men made it out of the structure with moderate injuries, but firefighters said an 80-year-old woman was trapped inside of a bedroom.

"The firefighters did have to go inside to try to rescue (her). They successfully pulled the person out...(she) was transported to a local hospital," said Asst. Chief Ronnie Villanueva.

The woman later died of her injuries. The woman's husband and son suffered burns and smoke inhalation. They were taken to County-USC Medical Center for treatment.

The fire was extinguished in 13 minutes. Investigators say there were no initial signs of foul play.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
