Elderly Woman In Grave Condition, 2 Men Injured In Apartment Fire Near Chinatown

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) – An apartment fire near Chinatown Wednesday evening left an elderly woman in grave condition and two men injured.

The blaze was reported around 6 p.m. in a bedroom at a two-story apartment complex at 756 N. Cleveland Street.

Two men made it out of the structure with moderate injuries, but firefighters said the older woman was trapped inside of the bedroom.

"The firefighters did have to go inside to try to rescue (her). They successfully pulled the person out...(she) was transported to a local hospital," said Asst. Chief Ronnie Villanueva of the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

It took crews a little over 10 minutes to extinguish the fire, according to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Authorities said there was no sign of foul play, but arson investigators still combed through the complex.
