Hundreds Of Kids Get Their 'Miracle On 1st Street'

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — Hundreds of people have lined city streets in Boyle Heights on Saturday to partake in a toy giveaway.

Art Barron, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, says celebrities have donated 10,000 toys for the "Miracle on 1st Street" giveaway.

The event – the city's largest toy giveaway for inner-city kids -- got underway at the Hollenbeck Youth Center at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Daniel Hernandez, President of the Hollenbeck Youth Center, says the event has been taking place for 31 years.

"For 31 years, we've been building into a stage of this magnitude. We're going to actually give out 10,000 toys to these kids," Hernandez said.

"These kids understand that our inner-city community sometimes needs someone to champion them… someone to put the toys out there for them so that they can have a really nice miracle on 1st Street," he said.
