BALDWIN HILLS (CBSLA.com) — A standoff suspect was fatally shot by police overnight following a standoff in which a mother and her two children were held hostage.
Officers responded to a domestic dispute between the suspect and his former girlfriend around 7 p.m. at an apartment in the 7100 block of Don Ricardo Drive in Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles police said.
The armed 27-year-old man reportedly came over to the home, assaulted the woman and held her and their two children hostage.
“The officers responded and were met with a victim who indicated that her ex-boyfriend had battered her and was inside the location with the children,” Sgt. Rudy Lopez said.
After trying to negotiate with the man for six hours, the SWAT team entered the home around 1 a.m., officials said.
“Due to the welfare of the children, they made entry into the room where the children and the suspect was. Unfortunately an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Lopez said.
The suspect was fatally wounded in the shooting. His identity was not released.
The two children, ages 3 and 6, were not harmed.
The shooting is under investigation.
