Caught On Camera: Caretaker Allegedly Steals From Disabled Woman
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A caretaker is accused of stealing from a disabled woman and leaving her stranded in bed in downtown Los Angeles.
The incident happened at the Tuscani Villas apartment complex last Friday.
Patrice Mason, who is confined to a wheelchair and legally blind, said she recently returned home after spending 14 months in the hospital.
On her first day back, she said she realized she desperately needed help because she wasn’t able to get out of bed on her own.
“I was literally in bed. It was 10 a.m. and I literally needed a human to come through the door and help me out,” said Mason.
Mason said she placed an ad on Craigslist for a caretaker, but didn’t have time to run a background check on anyone.
A woman who said her name was Jasmine answered the ad and told Mason she had home care experience.
Mason said Jasmine brought her boyfriend to the apartment to help lift her out of bed.
“I mean, it was a total disaster,” she said.
Mason fired Jasmine after four days, but before the caretaker walked out, Mason claims Jasmine and her boyfriend stole from her.
Security video from the apartment building shows a man taking the victim’s Mac Mini and a 36-inch flat screen monitor.
“It’s obviously them, and he’s got the computer right under his arm. My life is in that computer. All my work, years of my poetry, and my music… and everything I do,” she said.
Mason said the situation was made worse because the suspects left her alone in bed.
“It’s unbelievable to me that people are capable of that,” she said.
Mason doesn’t have family in the area to assist her.
