BELL GARDENS (CBSLA.com) — A big rig crash has sent 1,500 gallons of liquid asphalt onto the northbound 710 Freeway in Bell Gardens.

The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m., near the Florence Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The spill has prompted the complete closure of the northbound side of the freeway as hazmat crews attempt to mop up the asphalt, which has started to solidify.

The big rig tank involved in the collision can carry up to 7,800 gallons of liquid asphalt.
