Search Continues For Suspects Following Deputy Shooting

FLORENCE (CBSLA.com) — Four men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy and authorities say they are looking for additional suspects.

The massive search, which initially shut down 16 blocks in downtown Los Angeles, began just after 9:30 p.m. Friday following the shooting in the area of E. 81st Street and Zamora Avenue.

"We have OSS, our gang investigations. We have our SEB, which is Special Enforcement Bureau, SWAT team, we have K9's out here. We have local patrol deputies from different stations. LAPD was out here," said Nicole Nishida, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The victim, identified as a member of the anti-gang unit known as Operation Safe Streets (OSS), has been part of the Sheriff's Department for 15 years. He was rushed to an area hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

CBS2's Louisa Hodge says he along with two other deputies tried to detain five to six suspects walking on the street just before the shooting. She reported that as soon as the deputies exited the car, numerous men fired at them.

As of 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Hodge said about five blocks remained cordoned off.
