Memorial Held In Manhattan Beach For 2 Children Allegedly Slain By NYC Nanny

MANHATTAN BEACH (CBS) — A memorial was held Saturday at Manhattan Beach for two young children allegedly slain by their New York City nanny last month.

Yoselyn Ortega, 50, was formally charged tonight with the stabbing deaths of Lucia and Leo Krim, two children in her charge.

Ortega was charged in her hospital bed where she continues to recover from self-inflicted knife wounds. She is accused of stabbing to death 6-year-old Lucia  (AKA Lulu) and her 2-year-old brother Leo. Their mom, Marina, found the children --  murdered in a bathtub in the family's $10,000 a month apartment --- when she returned from swimming lessons with three-year-old daughter, Nessie.

Meanwhile, a memorial service for the two children the nanny allegedly murdered was held this afternoon at Manhattan Beach.

The children's parents, Kevin and Marina Krim, both have ties to Southern California.

CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills attended the emotional memorial.

"It's a horrible nightmare, I can't even imagine," said family friend Patricia Olsen. "When you have someone you trust with your children, this kind of betrayal must be unimaginable. The pain and suffering they can never wake up from."

Her husband said, "I can't imagine what the parents are going through. It's hard to believe."

The Olsens were among scores of friends who came to pay their respects to the children and their parents.

Marina grew up in a prominent Manhattan Beach family. And Mills reports, Manhattan Beach was Lulu's favorite.

Husband Kevin grew up in Thousand Oaks. He met his future wife when both were dining at an Italian restaurant in Venice Beach. Their ties to Southern California were many.

The Olsens knew the Krims very well. "Wonderful people, caring people, wonderful," they both echoed.
