VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — A 22-year-old Hispanic man is dead and a woman is in custody following a brief pursuit and shootout with Los Angeles police in the San Fernando Valley Wednesday night.
KNX 1070′s John Brooks police said officers attempted to pull over two suspects in a silver Nissan sedan for a minor traffic violation around 9:40 p.m.
The male suspect and Vanessa Acosta, 26, refused to comply with officers, and a pursuit began near Van Nuys Boulevard and Firmament Avenue, Sgt. Rudy Lopez said.
At least one suspect fired at officers during the five-minute chase that ended when the driver lost control after police rammed the vehicle at the intersection of Vanowen Street and Firmament Avenue, said police.
According to officials, the pair exited the vehicle and began shooting at officers, who returned fire.
“The officers, in defense of their lives, fired at the suspects, where ultimately one was killed,” Lopez said.
The male suspect, who has an extensive criminal history, died at the scene, Lopez said.
Acosta suffered minor injuries and was arrested.
No officers were injured.
The investigation into the shooting continued Thursday morning.
