Body Found Floating Off Laguna Beach

LAGUNA BEACH (CBS) — A 60-something man who had gone snorkeling at Goff Cove Beach in Laguna Beach was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.

About 1:30 p.m., the man, whose name was not released, had gone snorkeling in the ocean, near the Montage Resort and Spa, Laguna Beach police Lt. Jason Kravetz said.

Just before 4 p.m., police were called when someone saw a body floating in the water, Kravetz said.

Bystanders pulled him out of the water and tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the beach, Kravetz said.

Witnesses told CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Stacey Butler that the currents were incredibly strong at the time the man was found dead.

She said the man, who hailed from Orange County, was probably trying to enjoy one of the last warm beach days of the year.

Sgt. Tim Kleiser told Butler, "He was seen in snorkeling gear. He then went out to the ocean to snorkel."

The man was pulled out of the water by an off-duty paramedic from Utah and tried to resuscitate the man.

The victim had a cut to the forehead but foul play is not suspected.
