ROLLING HILLS ESTATES (CBSLA.com) — A 69-year-old driver died Tuesday morning after his car collided with a wandering horse.
Ryan Yonny Koyama’s Mercedes hit the horse near the intersection of Palos Verdes Drive North and Crenshaw Boulevard just after 2 a.m., authorities said.
The “horse had gotten loose from a nearby stable and was running in the traffic lanes,” the California Highway Patrol said in a statement.
Following the collision, Koyama’s car hit a wood and chain link fence, officials said.
Koyama was taken to Torrance Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he later died, officials said.
“Due to the severity of the injuries, the horse was euthanized at the scene,” the CHP said.
The crash is under investigation.
