NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police have made an arrest in the hit-and-run death of a prominent Orange County doctor and avid cyclist.
Michael Jason Lopez, 39, of Anaheim, was arrested early Tuesday morning and booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, according to Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe. Lopez was being held on $100,000 bail.
Police say they will not release any further information about the case in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
Lopez is suspected of driving the black pickup truck that fatally struck 57-year-old Catherine Campion-Ritz of Irvine, a prominent Orange County physician who was president of the Greater Newport Physicians medical group for more than 20 years, on Saturday morning.
The driver of the truck fled the scene without stopping to render aid, police said.
Anyone with information about the collision can call Traffic Investigator Eric Little at (949) 644-3746.
