Deputy Kills Suspect, 27, During Fight Over Gun In Paramount

PARAMOUNT (CBSLA.com) —A 27-year-old man was shot and killed by a deputy after they fought over a gun in Paramount on Monday night.

The incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. at the Americana Mobile Home Park on the 16600 block of Downey Avenue.

Police said the suspect's grandfather called 911 to report his grandson was "acting crazy."

When authorities arrived on scene, a fight broke out between the suspect and the deputy at the trailer home.

"This individual said he wasn't going back to jail and started fighting with the deputy," said Lt. John Corina from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "During the fight, the individual tried to choke out the deputy, he struck the deputy, and he tried to get the deputy's gun."

Corina said the deputy shot the suspect as they struggled over the gun.

The 27-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy suffered non-life threatening injuries from the fight and was transported to a local hospital.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
