Man Convicted In Death Of Donna Jou Faces Trial For Ammunition Possession

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The registered sex offender who pleaded guilty in the 2007 death of Orange County college student Donna Jou is set to go on trial for a felony count of possession ammunition.

John Steven Burgess, 40, pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony count of possessing ammunition and was ordered to return to court Nov. 2 for trial.

Last month, Burgess waived his right to a hearing to determine if there was enough evidence to require him to stand trial on the ammunition charge. If convicted in this case, he faces up to three years in county jail, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Burgess, a registered sex offender, was picked up July 23 at his apartment in the 5500 block of Barton in Hollywood on suspicion of possessing ammunition after two women called police about him.

Burgess pleaded guilty in May 2009 to involuntary manslaughter and a misdemeanor count of concealment of an accidental death involving the disappearance of 19-year-old Donna Jou, a coed from Rancho Santa Margarita. He served roughly half of his five-year term and was released from Men's Central Jail last December.
