Family Of Murdered San Gabriel Woman Looking For Answers

SAN GABRIEL (CBSLA.com) — The family of a San Gabriel woman who was murdered in April 2010 is still desperate to find answers.

The family recently hired a private investigator -- a former FBI man --  to crack the case. They want to know who killed Donglei Shi, also known to friends as Kyral.

Her brother, Brian, says until the family knows who killed his sister, and why, "We can't move on."

He says "the family has hope" her killer will be found. Shi believes someone out there knows something "about what happened that night."

CBS2's Kristine Lazar interviewed the victim's family and the investigator they hired, Dale Kelley.

Lazar reports no suspect was ever arrested and no suspect description was ever released.

But Kelley found a witness who he believed hadn't been interviewed by law enforcement. The witness was the person who discovered Shi's body.

Kelley says the witness claimed to have seen a man sitting in Shi's car. The witness claimed to have seen a woman matching Shi's description draped across the man's lap.

"She was number one in her class at Long Beach State. And she had a great future. And it just snuffed out," Kelley said.

The China-born Shi worked for an eye wear company and also sold life insurance as a side business.

On April 8, 2010, the then 31-year-old woman was strangled and raped in Alhambra and later dumped near a drainage ditch.

Lt. John Corina says police have interviewed the man who found the body and re-interviewed him this past week. Corina says the case has never gone cold.

"There just hasn't been enough there to file a case on anybody," he said, adding, "We're still working on it and trying to develop leads."

The family has offered a reward leading to the killer.
