Car Theft Suspect Wounded In Santa Ana Officer-Involved Shooting

SANTA ANA (CBS) — A car theft suspect was shot and wounded by a Santa Ana police officer early Monday morning, authorities said.

The shooting occurred behind a laundry mat at 3005 South Bristol Street just after midnight, Santa Ana police said.

A witness from an apartment complex called police after they noticed a man acting strangely near a Jeep that was parked behind the business.

When an officer arrived, he saw that the man was armed with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred, he said.

The officer fired at the suspect several times in the upper torso, police said.

The suspect, who was on parole, was transported to UCI, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Officials later confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen.

The suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured.
