LOS ANGELES (AP) — Six people were arrested as dozens rallied outside a county jail in downtown Los Angeles jail in favor of a bill aimed at protecting some illegal immigrants from deportation.
Police Capt. Horace Frank says five of the people were arrested Thursday for refusing to disperse as they blocked an intersection, four of them illegal immigrants, including two 17-year-olds.
One woman was arrested for the alleged battery of a firefighter.
About 30 people took part in the demonstration, and police say they did not have a protest permit.
They rallied in favor of the Trust Act, which has passed the legislature and awaits the signature of Gov. Jerry Brown. It limits local law enforcement’s participation in a federal program to check the immigration status of people who are arrested.
