LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man stole a Los Angeles Police Department squad car early Friday morning and then crashed it into a Starbucks and a light pole in Mid-city.
The crash happened in the 1200 block of South La Brea Avenue just before 4 a.m., according to LAPD officials.
Police say the 25-year-old suspect stole the car from an officer who had left the cruiser running while responding to an assault with a deadly weapon call in South Los Angeles.
The suspect, who was reportedly driving 100 miles per hour prior to the crash, was ejected after losing control of the vehicle.
The 25-year-old, whose leg was severed in the accident, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
La Brea is expected to be shut down between San Vicente Boulevard and West 12th Street until noon for an investigation. A Sig Alert was issued.
The identity of the suspect was not released.
No officers were injured.
