RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A man allegedly slammed his Mercedes-Benz into a police patrol car, nearly totaling the vehicle, and then fled on food into an apartment building Tuesday, according to the Riverside Police Department.
The suspect, who police identified as a possible gang member with a prison record, crashed into the patrol unit at 2:43 p.m. on University Avenue. The man then drove several blocks to the 700 block of Navajo Drive, where he fled on foot to a nearby apartment complex by the UC Riverside campus, police said.
Officers initially believed the suspect was hiding inside a house on Navajo Drive until witnesses directed them to an apartment complex in the 5200 block of Pear Blossom Drive, less than two blocks away.
With the help of an air unit, officers located the man in the parking lot of the complex and placed him under arrest.
Officers in the patrol unit were not seriously injured, police said.
