Robber Allegedly Runs Over Off-Duty Police Officer With Getaway Car

RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a robber ran his car over an off-duty police officer who was chasing the suspect from his home on Monday night.

The robber tripped an alarm at the home, and the security company alerted the homeowner, who works as a corporal officer with the West Covina Police Department.

The homeowner found the intruder as he was walking out the front door and the off-duty officer confronted him.

"I was sitting in the living room and I heard 4 to 5 shots," said neighbor Joe Carlos, adding, "Immediately, when we heard them, I ran outside and I saw commotion in the front of the house. We knew it was our neighbor, so we ran up to her. Her husband was walking around pretty dazed and bleeding from the head. When we saw her we asked her what happened and she said, 'We just got an intruder in the house, and he ran off, and he ran over my husband, and my husband fired five shots at him.'"

The officer fired at least five shots at the alleged burglar as he chased him from the house. While the suspect was fleeing the scene, he drove over the homeowner with his car, dragging the officer for several feet, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department reported.

The officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police reported.

Authorities are searching for the robbery suspect.
