Man Arrested After Trying To Run Over LAPD Officer
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A driver in an SUV led police on a short pursuit Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles after trying to run over a police officer on a bicycle who attempted to pull him over for a traffic stop.
That driver is now in police custody, according to Officer Karen Rayner of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The man in his 20s is believed to have been “under the influence of something” according to an specialist who was called to the scene by LAPD.
Rayner says the incident began at about 4:25 p.m. when an officer on a bike attempted to make a traffic stop on the driver, but the man reportedly attempted to run over the officer.
A motor officer got involved and took up the chase. During this time, the suspect drove on the wrong-way of the street, according to Rayner.
The very short pursuit came to a stop after the driver crashed into two vehicles at Fourth and Main streets in downtown Los Angeles.
LAPD officers initially thought a pedestrian had been hit by the suspect, but it turned out the person complaining of pain was in one of the two vehicles the suspect crashed into.
Drugs and money were found in the car, according to LAPD.
Officer Rayner says the suspect reportedly threw money and drugs out of his car as he drove.
The driver has been booked with felony evading and assault with a deadly weapon.
