Twitter Back Up After Suffering Worldwide Outage

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — Social networking site, Twitter, has been restored Thursday morning after it was down for over an hour in the United States and abroad.

"Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue," the Twitter status page said when the site was unreachable.

Users reported outages or sluggishness in trying to access Twitter from countries in North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The social networking site went down around 8:40 a.m. PST.

Twitter spokeswoman Rachel Bremmer said Thursday that "we're aware of the issue and are looking into it." She didn't immediately elaborate on the nature of the problem.

The Olympics are expected to bring an unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans on social networking sites.

At the recent European Championship final, users fired off more than 15,000 tweets-per-second, setting a sports-related record for the site.

Twitter was last down on June 21.
