CARSON (CBS) — A 3-month-old kitten is being well-cared for Thursday after surviving a nearly 2,700-mile journey by sea from Shanghai, China to Los Angeles without food or water.
The orange and white male kitten was discovered inside a freight container that arrived at a business in Compton from Wednesday. The manager of the business called the county department of Animal Care and Control, which brought the kitten to Carson Animal Care Center’s medical unit.
The kitten “ate a good meal last night and slept soundly,” DACC Director Marcia Mayeda said.
The kitten woke up Thursday morning alert and responsive, which officials said was very promising for a kitten who was clinging to life just 24 hours ago.
Staff and volunteers have named the kitten “Ni Hao,” which is Chinese for “hello.”
Ni Hao is under quarantine and is being monitored as an animal entering the United States from another country. Officials say its unlikely he has received any vaccinations due to his young age.
Anyone interested in adopting Ni Hao can email carson@animalcare.lacounty.gov or call (310) 527-5146.
