Comedian Apologizes After Gang Rape Joke Goes Viral

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A comedian issued an apology this week after a Tumblr post, claiming a woman was targeted for a gang rape joke, went viral.

Daniel Tosh, host of Comedy Central's "Tosh.0," issued a mea culpa Monday via his Twitter account, posting "all the out of context misquotes aside, I'd like to sincerely apologize," and including a link to the Tumblr post.

The post, which the blogger claimed happened to a friend of hers and that the account was in the friend's words, details a night out at the Laugh Factory when Tosh begins making "very generalizing, declarative statements about rape jokes always being funny, how can a rape joke not be funny, rape is hilarious, etc."

The writer claims she yelled out, "Actually rape jokes are never funny!" and that Tosh paused before saying, "Wouldn't it be funny if that girl raped by like, 5 guys right now? Like right now? What if a bunch of guys just raped her…" The writer, who was with a friend, says they were stunned and left immediately as the audience laughed at Tosh's joke.

The writer says she complained to the manager and was given a pair of complimentary tickets.

Another tweet from Tosh says, "the point I was making before I was heckled is there are awful things in the world but you can still make jokes about them. #deadbabies."
