Swimming Safety Tips With Donna Tetreault That Will Keep Summer Fun

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — Now that summer has arrived, it's also swim season! And you know what that means... keeping a watchful eye on children while they're swimming.

Donna Tetreault of Super Mommy... Not stopped by KCAL9 Tuesday to discuss the following facts about safe swimming:

  • When a drowning occurs it is silent and can happen within seconds
  • Pass on the plastic, water wings and other flotation devices are not recommended for children who cannot swim. It gives a false sense of security.
  • Older children also need to be supervised at all times.
  • Make sure the person supervising knows how to swim (seems obvious, but drownings have occurred when the person in charge doesn't know how to swim)

Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death for children ages 1 to 14. It is recommended by the American Academy of pediatrics that children ages 4 and up have some kind of formal swimming lesson.
