Man In Custody After Holding Police At Bay For 3 Hours
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A man has been taken into custody after holding police at bay for three hours and prompting evacuations in downtown Los Angeles.
The incident began about 2 a.m. Saturday at an apartment in the 600 block of Maple Avenue and Fifth Street.
Police say the suspect pointed what looked like a semiautomatic weapon at a crowd and a motorcycle officer. He then ran into his apartment barricading himself inside.
Authorities evacuated neighboring residents while SWAT officers tried to coax him out. At one point, police say they fired at a light to darken the hallway prompting the suspect to quickly surrender.
The suspect was arrested shortly after 5 a.m.
Officials said the man had a toy gun.
