Alleged Hoarder Taken Into Custody After Standoff At Long Beach Home

LONG BEACH (CBS) — An apparent dispute with a code enforcement inspector that led to a standoff on Thursday between a North Long Beach resident and SWAT officers ended with one man in custody and another hospitalized.

A male suspect emerged from the residence in the 6100 block of John Avenue after SWAT officers dispersed tear gas into the home around 2:40 p.m., according to police.

The initial shooting occurred around 8 a.m. when code enforcement inspectors went to the residence, officials said.

The suspect reportedly opened fire, hitting one of the inspectors in the eye, according to authorities.

Long Beach police transported the wounded man for hospital treatment and was expected to survive, officials said.

Neighbors described the resident as a hoarder and had previously asked him to clean up the mess around his yard.

The standoff lasted for nearly 7 hours before the suspect finally surrendered.
