Mother Accused Of Drowning Her 2-Month-Old Baby Girl

SANTA ANA (CBS) — The mother of a 2-month-old baby girl is expected to appear in court Tuesday after being arrested on suspicion of drowning her own child.

Police were called to a mobile home park at 518 South Sullivan Friday to check on a baby girl that had died under suspicious circumstances. When officers and medics arrived, the newborn, named Kimberly Gutierrez, was unconscious and not breathing, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, Santa Ana police said.

The child's grandmother, who had gone to the store, told police she found the baby floating in a Jacuzzi tub half full of water. Police believe the girl's mother, 27-year-old Lucero Diaz Carrera, threw the newborn in the hot tub.

Carrera, however, had taken a bottle of prescription medicine and was displaying symptoms of overdosing, police said. She was taken to Coastal Community Hospital for treatment.

Carrera was released from the hospital Monday and booked on charges of assaulting a child resulting in her death and homicide. Carrera remains in custody on $1 million bail and is expected to appear in court Tuesday. She faces a maximum sentence of up to life in state prison.
