8,000 Pounds Of Illegal Fireworks Seized From Willowbrook Home
WILLOWBROOK (CBS) — Authorities say they have recovered 8,000 pounds of illegal and dangerous fireworks with a street value of more than $20,000 in Willowbrook.
Sheriff’s deputies said in a statement that they executed a search warrant at the home in the 1600 block of East 124th Street about 5:40 p.m. on June 27, after receiving information that fireworks were being stored and sold at that location.
Upon arrival, deputies say they seized about 150 boxes of illegal fireworks from the garage with more found in a storage shed.
The statement said skyrockets, morters, pyrotechnics and explosives were among the fireworks found along with several guns and $10,000 in cash.
“If a spark had ignited these 8,000 pounds of fireworks in this populated residential area, the damage to the community would have been devastating, and possibly deadly,” said Captain Joe Gooden, LASD Century Sheriff’s Station. “We are all grateful to the citizen who was concerned enough to call it in.”
The resident of the home, identified by authorities as 71-year-old Aaron Piggee, was arrested and booked on suspicion of possession of an explosive device, selling fireworks without a proper permit, and possession of a loaded unregistered firearm, deputies said.
Four others in the home were detained but subsequently released.
