Man, 77, Fatally Struck By Car After Falling Onto Roadway

MURRIETA (CBS) —  A 77-year-old man was killed in Murrieta after he stumbled on a roadway and a car struck him.

The man was identified by the county coroner as Norman J. Voorhees.

Witnesses told police they saw Voorhees fall onto Kalmia Street about 250 feet east of Jefferson Avenue in Murrieta shortly after 9 p.m. Friday. He was hit by a sedan, said Murrieta police Sgt. Jim Gruwell.

Voorhees was taken to Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar, where he was pronounced dead at 9:35 p.m., the coroner said.

The driver of the vehicle, who was not injured, remained at the scene and showed no signs of being impaired when interviewed by officers, according to Gruwell.

"Witnesses at the scene said the pedestrian had an unsteady gait and had fallen into the roadway from the north sidewalk prior to the collision," Gruwell said.
