COMPTON (AP) — Prosecutors say a 31-year-old Compton man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in the beating death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter.

Los Angeles County district attorney’s spokeswoman Jane Robison says Omar Gutierrez was sentenced Friday after being convicted in March of second degree murder and assault.

The toddler was the daughter of his live-in girlfriend, and was identified as Leslie R. in court documents.

The child was pronounced dead Nov. 12, 2010, after Gutierrez and the child’s mother called paramedics.

Gutierrez was arrested after sheriff’s investigators learned that the toddler died from a blow or blows to her abdomen.
