Swimmer Dies After Being Pulled From Ocean In Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — A 59-year-old swimmer was pulled from the ocean in Newport Beach Wednesday and died at a local hospital, authorities said.

The apparent drowning victim, identified by the coroner's office as Tony Castleman of Tucson, Ariz., was brought ashore about 8:30 a.m. at 15th Street.

Two surfers put the swimmer on their boards as lifeguards pulled the victim ashore, according to Jennifer Schulz of the Newport Beach Fire Department.

He was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead at 9:26 a.m.

No other information was immediately released.
