LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Hundreds of veterans who just finished their tours or have been out of the military for years turned out in droves for a job fair held at Dodger Stadium Thursday.
Jorey and Nadtay Carter, along with their 9-month-old boy, drove 3 hours for the “Hiring Our Heroes” job fair.
“He’s been looking for a year…yeah, it’s been pretty difficult,” Nadtay Carter said.
Nadtay’s husband served three tours in Iraq with the Air Force.
“It’s time for me to slow my pace down and be a family man — not go overseas as much,” Jorey said.
Jorey said the job market has been bleak for veterans like him — qualified but left to convince employers they can transition their military skills to civilian job requirements.
“I’d like managerial spot anything really to keep me close to home to see this little guy every day not asking for much just a chance to provide for my family,” said a female veteran who brought along her young son.
The purpose is to meet other employers interested in hiring from the military pool of applicants.
“This is a chance to make a first impression. With many who served in the military, this is what helps us the most and we see veterans on other side of the table,” said Jasen Williams, of “Recruit Military.”
Veterans and fair organizers said the event is a step in the right direction – helping veterans find work – but that the problem is far from solved.
