Man’s Charged With Killing Roommate, 67, When He Intervened In A Fight

VAN NUYS (CBS) — A North Hollywood man was charged Tuesday with killing his 67-year-old roommate after he intervened in a fight.

Manuel Garcia, 21, pleaded not guilty in a Van Nuys courtroom to slaying Jorge Valladares.

Police said Garcia was having an argument with his live-in girlfriend Saturday at the apartment they were sharing with Valladares and others in the 12000 block of Vanowen Street.

Valladares reportedly tried to intervene in the altercation when Garcia turned on him, stabbing and repeatedly striking him.

Garcia was arrested later that day near Barbara Ann Street and Bellaire Avenue, police said.

He remains jailed on $1 million bail, the LAPD reported. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 14 to determine if there is enough evidence to require Garcia to stand trial.
