FULLERTON (CBS) —  A 45-year-old Garden Grove man was convicted Monday of physically abusing his roommate, who has Down syndrome.

Richard Vu Nguyen was convicted of a felony count of dependent adult abuse, with sentencing scheduled for Aug. 17.

The victim’s family suspected the 46-year-old woman was being abused, so they set up a surveillance camera in her bedroom in March 2011, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Nguyen went into the woman’s room sometime between March 31 and April 9 of last year, jumped on her bed and kicked her in the head and chest, according to prosecutors.

The woman is unable to communicate verbally because of her disability, prosecutors said.
