Man's Body Discovered During Investigation Into Foul Odor

SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — Officers responding to reports of a foul odor in an Inland Empire backyard Tuesday discovered a man's body placed in a shallow grave.

"Everything is very suspicious in nature at this point in time," according to Sgt. Gary Robertson.

A neighbor notified police at 9 a.m. that a suspicious odor was coming from the back of the home in the 200 block of East 11th Street, Robertson said.

Officers investigated and found a five-foot hole dug in the backyard. Pieces of wood and debris were covering the body of a man who had been dead at least several days, Robertson said.

Officers were rounding up witnesses for their investigation Tuesday night, according to police. They were also awaiting the arrival of the coroner's department on scene.

Police have not yet determined if the person is the victim of foul play, Robertson said.

San Bernardino police said that the residence is known for some drug activity.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective John Munoz at (909) 384-5630 or Sergeant Gary Robertson at (909) 841-5361.
