APPLE VALLEY (CBS) — An Apple Valley high school student won a brand new car over the weekend and all because she hadn’t missed a day of school.

Sydney Toney, a sophomore at Apple Valley High School, won a 2012 Jeep Patriot as part of the, “It’s a Gas to Go to Class” promotion, sponsored by Victorville Motors.

The company had approached all nine High Desert high schools.

“I didn’t think that I’d be able to do it,” Toney told CBS2′s Greg Mills.

Many were apparently inspired by the chance to win and a total of 962 students never missed a day of school, including 93 at Apple Valley High.

“We’re excited. We knew that this would be a motivator for students to want to make sure they came to class every day,” said Apple Valley High Principal Pat Schlosser. “The students who are here, who have better attendance – not necessarily perfect – but the students with good attendance, they just do better.”

We’re told Toney is a good student.

In addition to the car, she was given $500 to give to a deserving teacher.

Last weekend, Toney and four other perfect attendees were randomly selected and got to choose a key they believed would start the car — obviously, Toney got the winning key.

There’s just one problem with all this… the teen doesn’t have a driver’s license or a permit.

So for now, Toney’s mom will be behind the wheel which she says she doesn’t mind.
