SIMI VALLEY (CBS) — The search for a former USC and NFL football player who went missing while hiking was called off Monday afternoon.

KNX 1070's Vytas Safronikas reports the search for Erik Affholter ended Monday after authorities received work that Affholter had called and checked in with family.

"This morning at about 8:00 Eric Affholter spoke with his ex-wife, as well as yesterday he spoke with his mother on the phone," Simi Valley Police Sgt. Craig Duncan said. "At this point, we don't know where he is."

Authorities began searching for Affholter, 46, late Sunday night after he failed to return from a hike.

Affholter's girlfriend told authorities that she dropped him off at a trailhead by the Simi Valley Metro station around 10 a.m. Sunday. She called authorities at 9:45 p.m. to report he was missing.
